Ród Baratheonów of Koniec Burzy is one of the Great Houses of Westeros, and is the principal house in the Krainy Burzy. Its seat, Koniec Burzy, is an ancient castle raised by the Król Burzys. The Baratheon sigil is a crowned black stag on a field of gold.[1] Members of the family tend to be large, with black hair and blue eyes. They are known for their mercurial tempers, and their words are Ours is the Fury.

History

Baratheon is the youngest of the original great houses, tracing its descent from Orys Baratheon, one of Aegon I's fiercest generals, and rumored to be his bastard brother. Through the female line, the Baratheons are descended from the Storm Kings, as Orys slew Argilac the Arrogant, last of the Storm Kings, and married his daughter. Orys adopted the sigil and words of his wife's ancestral line.[2] The line of the Storm Kings dates back to the Era Herosów when their kingdom was founded by King Durran I "Godsgrief", a legendary hero.

During the Pierwsza Rebelia Blackfyre'a, the Baratheons remained loyal to the Targaryen Dynasty, providing much of the force commanded by Prince Baelor Breakspear at the decisive Bitwa na Polu Czerwonej Trawy. Princess Rhaelle Targaryen, daughter of Aegon V, married into the House and birthed Lord Steffon Baratheon, continuing the close ties between the smok and the stag. The rebellion that usurped the Targaryens, however, was started on behalf of Steffon's son Lord Robert Baratheon and his foster-brother, Eddard Stark. The Baratheons and their bannermen were instrumental in the conflict, along with Houses Arryn, Stark, and Tully, and, eventually, Ród Lannisterów. The Battle of Summerhall and Siege of Koniec Burzy were fixtures of the Krainy Burzy theater. After the war, the house spawned two cadet branches: one seated on the Żelazny Tron under King Robert, and another on the Isle of Smocza Skała headed by Lord Stannis. During the Bunt Greyjoyów against Robert's rule, the combined Baratheon fleet defeated the Żelazna Flota in the Battle of Fair Isle, commanded by Starszy nad Statkami Stannis. Stannis later subdued Wielka Wyk in his brother's name, presumably commanding the stormlords' hosts to do so.

Recent Events

With Robert and Stannis holding their own titles, the young Renly Baratheon became Lord of Koniec Burzy. Some time after he achieved majority, he was appointed to Robert's Mała Rada as Master of Laws. As Robert lay dying from a boar's tusk, Renly asked Eddard Stark, the Namiestnik Króla, to support him in a bid for the throne. Lord Stark refused, saying that if Cersei's children were bastards born of incest, then it was Stannis who should be king. Renly rode out of Królewska Przystań. Despite Stannis's better claim, Renly was able to rally the Krainy Burzy to his cause, as well as Ród Tyrellów. When King Renly was killed beneath the walls of Koniec Burzy as the brothers' hosts prepared to clash during the Wojna Pięciu Królów, he left no heirs, but his widow Margaery Tyrell later married his "nephew" Joffrey I. Most of the houses sworn to Koniec Burzy went over first to Stannis, then to Joffrey after the Bitwa nad Czarnym Nurtem. After Joffrey's death, the current head of the house is the king on the Żelazny Tron, Tommen I - a title disputed by King Stannis. The current garrison at Koniec Burzy is Stannis's last force in the south.

The Baratheon House at the end of the third century

The known Baratheons during the timespan of the events described on Pieśń Lodu i Ognia are:

  • King {Robert I}, King of Westeros. Gored by a boar.
  • Ser {Harbert}, most likely a Baratheon. Great-uncle of Robert, Stannis, and Renly. Once castellan of Koniec Burzy.
